Bang for your buck
My carrying case came in perfect shape. I didn’t get any funky smell with my set. There are no clunky noises when using these weights because there are rubber washers for both sides of the weights. They’re a good quality set, especially for the price. The product looks exactly as advertised. I’m probably going to end up buying gloves because I’m used to covered weights. I would recommend this set for anyone who is working on low weight, high rep type exercise.
Honest review addressing common concerns…
When originally considering this product I was very concerned with the number of negative reviews/comments that people were leaving about these dumbbells. After deciding to take the risk, I felt the need to write a review since I believe that the negative reviews are overblown and overly dramatic. I will hopefully address the main concerns that you as the prospective buyer are having while considering this product. If you don’t care about the details I have a TLDR at the bottom =)
MUCH nicer plates than the Yes4All
I bought this set over the Yes4All dumbbells for the storage case, so I could stow the weights neatly and out of the way when not in use. My brother-in-law has the Yes4All set, so I had a chance to compare the two closely. The overall neatness of the casting and machining of the bars and collars is slightly cleaner on the Yes4Alls, but only a pretty fussy bodybuilder would notice. Functionally, they’re about the same and in use I doubt anyone could tell the difference with their eyes closed. However, I REALLY like the plates on the CAP set much, much better. The edges are smooth and rounded rather than squared off like the Yes4All, with a much more comfortable feel when handling. If you’ll be swapping plates a lot, then I really recommend the CAP set. Also note that the CAP set includes 2.5 pound plates which let you increase weight in 5-pound increments, while the Yes4All set has 3 pound plates which means you must increase in 6-pound increments–a little odd.
37 lb, NOT 40 lb. But a good buy anyway.
Several other reviewers have remarked that this is NOT a 40 lb set. They’re right. I measured all parts on my 5 lb digital kitchen scale. The 2.5 lb plates were within 1.3 oz of 2.5 lb. The 5 lb plates were all at least 5 lb (they max’d out the scale). BUT the bars weigh 2 lb 11.2 and 2 lb 11.6 oz and each collar weighs from 6.2 oz to 7.2 oz. That means a bar with two collars weighs very close to 3.5 lbs. If you use both bars then it’s possible to make two 18.5 lb dumbbells. If you use one bar with all eight plates you’ve got a 33.5 lb dumbbell. There’s no room left on a bar once all eight plates are mounted and the collars spun tight. The O-rings on the bars and collars keep the dumbbells tight and quiet.
The best dumbbell set
These dumbbell’s are the very best quality. I am so impressed with them. I use them a lot, well maybe not as much as I should, but I have got a lot of use out of them and I can tell they are going to last. Very well put-together. The handles themselves are 5 lbs each. With four 2 1/2 lbs weights and four 5 lbs weights you have plenty weights to make the perfect weight for each exercise you do. That is great. My last dumbbell set was not flexible like that. I really like to switch weight between exercises for all my different routines. This product is a perfect example of you get what you pay for. You maybe able to find cheaper but you would be hard pressed to find better.
Good quality for the price
No scent here. Good quality for the price… which you can’t really beat. Case is sketchy at best but it holds the weights, and I have no plans to keep the weights in the case, so that point is irrelevant for me at least.
The case helps make this compact with no sacrifice to quality.
Handy little things. The carrying case makes it easy to take to work, which was why I got these, so I could use them on my down time. Instead of using them though I’m writing reviews on my phone and obsessively going over the same news articles from different outlets. Not the product’s fault though. The handles don’t feel cheap, nor does it look like the paint is going to chip off compared to another pair of older ones that I have. The weights are solid and as heavy as you’d think weights should be. I appreciate the rubber gasket on the screws. It seems to help keep enough pressure on them to keep from unscrewing when you’re using them (or in my case, not using them :P). I thought I’d be concerned with having to split the weights between the two and not working with anything heavier but then it donned on me….. that I could just use one barbell and do single arm exercises with all the weights. For the average guy, this set should do just fine.
Clearly a staple for home workouts
These dumbbells are well-made and have made a vast difference in the variety of exercises I can do at home. I also have a home gym, which is nice, but most exercise gurus sing praises of freeweights. For a beginner, the plates included are heavy enough, although I do intend to go buy 4 ten-pound plates soon. The locking nuts spin on and off smoothly and quickly, and the rubber gasket things do a great job of keeping the nuts from coming loose. While changing plates may not be as quick with these than with fancier models, these are also massively less expensive, so I’m fine with it. I wear gloves while using these, and I would encourage anyone else to as well, or your hands will take some punishment. I also bought an adjustable bench at the same time, which I feel was a very good decision (but up to you, obviously). I would definitely buy these again.
Great little set.
I’m recently recovering from shoulder/elbow surgery and needed a small, changeable set of dumbbells I could easily adjust the weights to build strength back slowly. I’ve had sets like these before and will only use screw lock systems like this one at home. I don’t have a home gym with a rack full of dumbbells like my gym has – but then again, I’m not at that point yet. (In fact it was pushing up a couple of 65 pounders doing military presses that got me into this mess). I bought 4 more 5 lb plates so I can add the weight I need before I try heading back to the gym.
