I bought this bar from Amazon, and my husband installed it for me. It is strong and does not bend in the middle, and the brackets work fine. However, this week the bar broke when I was at the top of a pull-up. I fell backwards onto the floor with great force, and took the brunt of the blow with my elbows, thus avoiding striking my head on the floor. The working out must have given me good bone mass, as my elbows and arms did not break, but were only bruised and bloodied.
Best made bar on the market
I have used several bars in the past and I have finally found one that is super sturdy, very safe and actually works. Several people have said that they don’t use the end brackets but you have to be sure that you have the right kind of finish on your walls or doorway for this and you have to test it before each use. Some paint is just too slick and the bar will slide right down the wall. If you use the brackets than you will never have to worry about this happening as the bar only extends from one end, which is a real pain when you are initially installing the unit because it unwinds very slowly. In fact I thought mine was stuck so I called j/fit and they patiently explained to me that this is done purposely so the bar does not loosen while in use. It is a very carefully designed unit with several safety features which makes it a top of the line bar for home use. The ends have black rubber pieces which can create an extra cushion or suction to the wall or the end caps (I think this is why people are able to use it without the brackets). It only extends from one end which allows for double thickness through the middle unless you have a very wide door. One con is that the neoprene grips are placed in weird position and I almost gave it a 4 star because of this but when I asked j/fit if I had to use it in this position (even the picture shows this use) they said that you have to move the grips into position because the way the bar is designed, and extends from one end only, the grips cannot be positioned before shipment or they would have to put it in a very long box. I found this pretty easy to do, I just ran my thumbs around the inside of the neoprene to kind of loosen the grip and them jimmied them into the proper place. As soon as you release the suction of the grips, they are easy to move, just don’t try to yank them into place.
Very sturdy and easy to install.
I bought this for my 3 year old to practice bars at home. It was easy to install it in the doorway and is sturdy enough even without the brackets for me to do a pullover without it slipping at all. I am 125 lbs. and my daughter is 25 lbs. If you’re using it for gymnastics I highly recommend using an old crib mattress. I’d definitely say this bar is gymnastics approved, however I would advise that you install the brackets just as a precautionary regardless of your child’s weight.
Nice and no screws necessary!
Works great. Follow the directions, though, about which way the bar rotates to tighten and loosen. So you have to face one way when doing underhanded pull-ups (palms toward you) and face the other way when your holding the bar overhand. That way, it always tightens when you’re on the bar rather than loosens.
Perfect for my needs
The doorway I hung this in is 30 inches, so I only needed to extend the bar about 4 inches to make it fit. I used the mounting brackets as I didn’t have any objection to putting them in my door frame. I did use some longer screws than the ones that came with it, but this is because I wanted them to bite into the stud and not only the molding.
I use it for kids gymnastics practice
I twist it and place it in the middle of the doorway with a mattress underneath for my kids to practise their gymnastics bar routines. Then remove it afterwords. Works perfectly. There’s a safety feature for permanent attachment to the door jamb, but it’s not my house so I don’t use it. It’s more than strong enough for 50lb kids, I make sure they stand so that if they twist the bar, they do so in the locking direction as opposed to the loosening direction. But it’s very tight on the doorway and I’m not afraid of it falling off.
Good value for stable, compact pull-up bar
This is a pretty good tension rod pull-up bar. Can only speak for my own weight but at ~160lbs is very stable. The grips it comes with are good but can be removed if you like (velcro). Mounting wasn’t too much of an issue, though you will need a drill to screw in the metal mounting brackets. Some reviews have mentioned it will hold without the brackets but I didn’t want to risk it.
Working well, modified end pieces to be more convenient
So far, so good. We installed in a doorway so that I could hang from it to stretch my back. The end pieces have a solid rim all the way around to hold the bar in place but I didn’t want to have to collapse the bar to remove it from the doorway every time, so my husband cut the top part of the rims off so that I can just insert the bar from the top and remove it from the top without collapsing it. Works fine. The grips hold well and have enough padding. We’ll see how it holds up to wear over time but it seems well made.
