I was in my best shape ever when I was going out dancing once or twice a week (in my late 20s)–lots of salsa and belly-dance moves that work the abs without crunches that put you on the floor and kill your neck and back. Times have changed, and so has my figure since I quit dancing. I resisted buying into the Zumba craze for while, ever since I saw the commercial once at 3:00 a.m. for the original set. I hesitated, first because everything looks great on a 3 a.m. infomercial; I figured it was the latest infomercial fitness fad. I’ve been disappointed by lots of work-outs that promise “dance moves you can take to the club” and then turn out to be nothing but club outfits, generic music, and aerobic exercise moves that would get you laughed out of a club. Then I read the reviews, and it seemed like everyone who had the set started out in the classes first. I’ve never been to a Zumba class and never wanted to work out in a room full of strangers–thus my reason for buying a home workout set to begin with. The price was also intimidating, and way more than I’ve ever paid for any of the other “dance party” workouts that found their way into a yard sale. Still, I want to get back into the shape I was happy with, and there were a lot of positive reviews, so I went for it. I did my first workout last night, with the Activate disc, and was sweating immediately. At first I saw a couple aerobics-style moves and thought “here we go again.” But those were few, and were incorporated well into the dance routine. Mostly there was actual, genuine, hip-swinging, shimmying, dancing–I had a little trouble keeping up. I can see just how rusty I’ve gotten, and I’ll have to work up to finishing the whole disc. Still, time flew by way faster than it does on the treadmill, and this was a lot more fun. I was absolutely sweating more, and my whole body knew I’d been working, but I barely noticed because it felt like dancing and not working out. Some of the moves can be a little tricky, especially when you’re trying to keep up with pros. When I got tripped up trying to follow the instructors, I just looked away from them and danced with the music–keeping hips and pelvis in motion. When I needed to catch my breath I just stood front and did hip circles till I could pick up the pace again. I still think the price is a little steep–especially since the little foam plugs that hold the discs in place had already popped off when I got it (it was new and sealed.) But they can be stuck back down with a dot of glue, so no big deal–minus 1 star for price and packaging. The picture and sound quality is very good, and the music is actually enjoyable–not like canned “exercise music” that comes with most workout DVDs. Some of the verbal exchange between the instructors comes off phony (and a little cheesy), but overall the mood during the workouts is light and fun. I’m not a fitness guru, have been in a gym once in my life (hated it), and am not using Zumba as a warm-up for, or addition to, any other exercise routine. Right now, this new Zumba series is my only workout since my treadmill needs maintenance. I’ve read a lot of reviews for fitness DVDs, equipment, and supplements, and they say things like “I use this every day, walk 5 miles, do free weights combined with cardio, cut out all soda and junk food, and I’ve lost 6 pounds!” To me, those reviews aren’t very helpful: first, a person working out that much is already in shape and has little or no weight to lose. Second, when you make that many lifestyle changes at once, results of SOME kind are inevitable–and can’t be credited to anything specific. Did the workout do it, or the lack of candy bars and soda? To really determine how well this routine works for me, I’m going to do Zumba and not change anything else for now. (I already eat mostly low-carb, but I cheat sometimes.) I’ll give it a few weeks, see what results I get, and then update.

Zumba definitely changed my life. I used to hate working out, but now it’s my favorite part of the day. Until I had the courage to start attending a live Zumba class, I had been using

Zumba has become for me a great, great way to get in shape. I can’t say for most people, but I hate working out. It is one of the most boring things in the world. I was skeptical when I first heard about their infomercials, as most infomercial products usually come & go. But I was attracted to the idea of ‘for people to who love to dance, but hate working out’, so I bought zumba total body transformation. I have that & exhilarate, so I can compare both.
Some of the best exercise videos you can find

I used to be an aerobics instructor and personal trainer, so I’m pretty familiar with what works in the way of work outs. Zumba is fun and surprisingly effective. I used it to lose 27 lbs last year, even though my metabolic rate was previously making it hard to lose anything.
The real deal!

Love it! I have taken the live classes which are amazing and wanted to simulate that exhilarating experience at home when I’m short on time. I tried the original Zumba set but was disappointed that it was so much like every other exercise video. Especially because the instructors talk to the whole video. Not with the set. The set feels so much more like the real classes The music is exciting, the energy is high, instructors do not yammer through the entire video, although you have the option to have voice over instructions if you want it.
Not for Beginners

I use to have the time of my life and felt great when I was dancing and performing on stage. But years later and family life have changed my figure and how I feel about myself. My husband has always told me that I am beautiful, but he made a comment one day that really hit home. He told me that he missed the old me. The one that was so full of life that no one could ever get to slow down for even a moment. The next week, he went in for his PT test (military) and didn’t do so hot. While we were talking about it, we both decided that we needed to get back into shape. So while he is sweating up a storm running and working out, I decided to get back into dancing but I wanted to get a work out as well. This is why I bought the Zumba Fitness DVD set.
Best total body workout!

If you want to learn how to dance, improve your coordination, feel sexy & confident, have fun, and listen to good (non-cheesy) music, this might be a good workout for you. For the number of DVDs you get, this is a great value. Even though Zumba is “a workout anyone can do,” the beauty of it is that it keeps you coming back for more so you actually reach your fitness goals. The 1st CD is a basic steps cd that takes you through the moves step-by-step. It has a nice “back view” feature that really helps you emulate what they are doing. You can spend hours happily trying to master the basic salsa, reggaeton, and cumbia before even starting the basic workout video. It’s also good at incorporating ab flexing, hip rotation and arms. The day after a workout my muscles feel just as sore as is if I’d been lifting weights. I’ve had this set for a year and I feel like I’m a better dancer, and I have a good sense of rhythm. Plus, I lost 30 lbs. after giving birth to my son, and Zumba is at least partly to blame!
This is an excellent series!
Disc 1 is a tutorial and I love that it was included. I used it 3 or 4 times before I tried to tackle the other discs. My husband has attempted the tutorial once so far. He hasn’t had any dance before so it is challenging at this point. We have both been to Zumba classes at our Senior Center and make it 50 minutes through the session before our bodies and brains give out at the same time. It is nice to be able to get better and build some stamina in the comfort of our home as we have a large area to use for working out. My husband bought this set for me for Christmas. I intersperse one of these with other workout DVD’s about every 2 weeks. Great aerobics and cardio AND coordination which we need at this stage of our lives. One of these days we will show up at the Senior Center and show them what we can do and how much we have improved since our last class there!
Very fun little kit
Very fun little kit. Great to start with if you are not comfortable with Zumba. The videos are very easy to learn and they even give you one that teaches you the basic moves first. You get the workout you work for. While these are easy videos, here is always a way to spice things up and you will have to get creative if you want to go beyond the basics. The weights are like maracas, but can be a little noisy. I bought this a few years ago and I like to use the maracas every once in a while to spice up my zumba workout. 😉
